My Mom in law has a vintage Olympia manual typewriter that she's pretty attached to but its' vinyl cover was in sad shape. Since it's one of the more common manual typewriters, it occurred to me that other typewriter enthusiasts might be happy to have this pattern as well. It wasn't anywhere close to something I've made before, but I think I gave it a fair shot. You, too, can make a cover for your vintage Olympia typewriter in an afternoon with this tutorial and pattern. You will need: 1/2 yard main print 1/2 yard lining 1/2 yard fusible fleece two strips of 2.5" x WOF (width of fabric) for binding Vintage Typewriter Cover Pattern Heat and Bond and fabric if you want a … [Read more...]
Talking DIRTy about Compost!
In honor of my Earth Day birthday, I want to talk dirty to you… Let’s talk about compost and why you should use it in your garden. Compost is decomposed food scraps and yard waste that is used as a soil supplement. The organic mixture that results is perfect for your fruit and vegetable garden because it is full of nutrients. Another benefit of creating compost is that it keeps kitchen scraps out of the landfill. The EPA.gov estimates that yard waste and food scraps make up roughly 20-30% of what we throw away. You do not have to be an Earth Day lover like myself to use and appreciate the benefits of compost. What you can save Greens: Fruit scraps Vegetable scraps Egg shells Coffee … [Read more...]
Grandma’s Strawberry Cream Pie
My grandma has quite the sweet tooth. Every time I visit her in Illinois she either has ice cream, cookies, or pie to share. Now, I'm not complaining, don't get me wrong! I, too, have a sweet tooth! One of my favorites is a strawberry cream pie that she makes for special occasions. It has become my go-to dessert for family gatherings in Utah. It is a perfect pie for this warmer weather we have been having. I'm here visiting Illinois this week so I thought it would be great to make the pie for grandma. I'd be lying if I said I haven't been craving it! Ingredients: 4 oz softened cream cheese, 1/2 c whipped cream, 1/2 c powdered sugar, graham cracker crust, 3 oz (4 serving) … [Read more...]
Sewing With Kids: 5 Minute Bookmark
My neighbor recently offered to trade me babysitting in return for sewing lessons for her 10 year old daughter, Morgan. (um, YES PLEASE!). Since Morgan did not have a lot of sewing experience, I wanted to start with several projects to get her more confident with sewing straight lines. This 5 minute bookmark is her second lesson. Sewing is great for children of Morgan's age group. Besides introducing them to a new creative outlet, it helps develop their fine motor skills and increases their confidence. Materials: 2- 2.5" x 7.5" scrap fabrics 2- 2.5" x 7.5" Craft Fuse interfacing Basting spray* Water soluble marker Pinking shears Bookmark … [Read more...]
Mini Notions Bag Tutorial
As a craft junkie, I can never have too many handmade baggies to store my goodies. I like being able to see what is inside the bags too, so I came up with this mini notions bag with some scrap laminated cottons I received from my friend at Compelled to Craft. To start, you will cut your fabrics as follows: All piecing will be done using a tephlon coated foot and a 1/4" seam allowance. All top stitching will be done with a smaller seam allowance. (I move my needle all the way to one side for top stitching. On my machine it is +/- 3.5). Straight stitch the sides to the vinyl piece then top stitch. Straight stitch the top and bottom … [Read more...]
Drawstring Treat Bag Tutorial
Gift giving is a great way to let someone know how much you love and appreciate them. The packaging of the gift is equally as important, don't you think? This special handmade treat bag will make any small gift extra sweet! To get started, cut a piece of fabric 7.75" h x 10.5" w. If using a light colored fabric for the outside, you may want to line it with a piece of white that is 7.50" x 10.5". A dark outside fabric does not need a lining. With the outside fabric face down (and optional liner on top with bottoms lined up), fold and iron the top down 1/4" then 1/4" again. By not making the liner the exact same size, we eliminate some of the bulk when … [Read more...]

Shape Cut Pro Review
Every once in awhile, a sewing tool is released that is an absolute "must have". When I first laid eyes on the Shape Cut Pro from June Taylor, I knew it would be on my gift wish list. I have mentioned in many previous posts the need for the original Shape Cut Ruler (Intermediate Quilting Tools and Giveaway, Modern Quilted Potholders, and A Heartfelt Mug Rug Tutorial to name a few). It is a ruler than I use every week on projects. But now, with the Shape Cut Pro I can easily cut binding strips, jelly roll strips, 5" squares, 10" squares, and sashing for my quilts in no time at all. This ruler is much larger than the original Shape Cut. It's wide enough to … [Read more...]
Quilted Burp Cloths
My friend recently had a baby girl so I took a break from sewing for my little boy to work on a gift for her. I wanted to come up with an item that would be functional but not just the standard bib, binky strap, and snack bag that she was already going to be getting from me. After making one, I decided my little guy needed one too. My fabrics are Oh Boy from Riley Blake to match my son's baby quilt. Jamie's fabrics are a mix of Riley Blake Snug as a Bug, Simply Sweet, and Basics. To make your own quilted burp cloths, you'll need a 9.5" x 18.5" piece of chenille, terry cloth, or flannel for the back, 9.5" x 18.5" flannel or quilt batting for the lining, and 18 3.5" … [Read more...]
