Homemade play-dough is very easy to make. It contains just 5 ingredients…
- Flour
- Salt
- Oil
- Water
- Food coloring
When you make play-dough/salt-dough with your kiddos you will make one batch in 3 separate bowls, this way you can make 3 different colors. You don’t want to make 1 large batch to try to split up later because you need to incorporate the food coloring in the water ahead of time and not directly into the dough.
Step 1- Place 3 bowls onto the counter top and gather ingredients
Step 2- Measure 1 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of salt into each bowl, then add 1 1/2 tsp. oil. (I used vegetable oil)
Step 3- Mix 8-12 drops of food coloring into 1/2 cup water and mix well.
Step 4- Pour one colored 1/2 cup water into each bowl.
Step 5- Mix and knead the dough with your hands, trust me, your hands will work a lot better than any other kitchen utensil. Knead until the dough is smooth and no longer sticks to your hands.
Kids love this part!
Step 6- Step back and take in the beauty of your creation and under no circumstances will you want to eat this dough. It is made from edible ingredients but the taste will keep it out of your kiddo’s mouths. (Yuck..ick..blech)
Step 7- Play with the play-dough.
Fun for kids and adults! We use some store bought play-dough tools, rolling pins, and mini cookie cutters during our play-dough sculpting session.
When you are finished, store the dough in an air-tight container and keep in the fridge for maximum longevity. It dries out over time but it stored properly it should last for a few weeks.
