This Sugar Skull face painting tutorial will show you step by step how to create the perfect look for Halloween or “Dia De Los Muertos”.
Sugar skulls stem from the Mexican holiday “Day of the Dead”. Sugar skulls are typically made from sugar or clay and used to decorate an alter, which is used to honor the dead on November 1-2. The intricate designs typically made of frosting are both beautiful and artistic. Here you can read more about the history of the “Day of the Dead”.
Sugar skulls have become increasing popular around the world. You can find sugar skull printed fabric, jewelry, t-shirts, paintings, shoes, and the list goes on. Don’t believe me, take a gander on Etsy!
My very artistic and talented niece painted sugar skull patterns on both her own and her sister’s faces for Halloween, and I thought it would be fun to share the process with you!
You will need a make up palette with face paint and a few brushes. This pallet is made by Mehron paradise and can be found on amazon.
Step 1- Start by tracing a circle or triangular shape around the eyes, and paint a shape onto the nose.
Step 2- Paint around the eyes and nose with a bone color, filling in the rest of the face.
Step 3- Paint on the mouth/teeth.
Step 4- Add details to the eye holes, add color wherever you desire, and add fun embellishments. This is part of the process is fun because you get to be creative. You can also add bright gem stickers or bedazzle beads for added glimmer.
