I love how an infinity scarf stays nicely around my neck without any fuss. When I get warm, I wear this one long and loose and when it’s cold, I double it snugly around my neck. The lovely thing about the Totally Looped garter stitch and lace diagonal loop is that it’s completely reversible, so there isn’t a lot of fuss arranging the right sides in place – just loop and go!

Instructions:
cast on 42 stitches with a provisional cast on. I like to use a spare cable needle for my provisional cast on so I can just pick it up for grafting afterwards without having to pick up the live stitches from waste yarn. (if you’d prefer to seam the loop together rather than use the grafting method, you can use the common long tail cast on)
1 – Row 1: k1, kfb, k to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1
2 – Row 2: k across
3 – Repeat Rows 1 and 2 six times
4 – knit the Lace inset 1
5 – knit the Lace inset 2
6 – knit the Lace inset 1
7 – repeat Row 2
8 – repeat rows 1 and 2 six times (12 rows, 6 garter ridges)
9 – repeat Row 1
10 – knit the Lace inset 2
11 – repeat Rows 1 and 2 twelve times (24 rows, 12 garter ridges)
12 – repeat Row 1
13 – knit the Lace inset 2
14 – repeat steps 3 -13 twice (you will have 3 wide lace insets and 6 thin lace insets)
block to approximately 8” x 58” (just enough to open lace but not stretch out garter stitch) Graft edges using garter stitch grafting method, or if provisional cast on wasn’t used, bind off loosely and seam together using mattress stitch in a continuous loop. Do not introduce a twist in the loop.
Enjoy this easy knitting pattern, and stay loopy!
That’s lovely! I will be printing this one out and working on it soon! Thanks!
You are so welcome, Aneta! Thanks for your kind words! 🙂
On row 3 of the lace inset 1 pattern I am left with only 41 sts – please advise
Thanks
Hi Sandra, I don’t have a stitch count for each row of the lace insets. You may find yourself with more/less stitches within the inset, but the key is to have the proper number of stitches at the end of the inset. I’ll have to cast on another to see if that is the case. In the meantime, it might help to use markers to mark off different sections within the row. That way you can look back to be sure you have the correct number in each section. That’s what works for me with lace knitting.
I also get 41 stitches total for row 3 (of lace insert 1). My math indicates that 41 would be the expected result following the directions but I could be mistaken. Really like the pattern!! Thanks.
Update. More math indicated all would be well at the end of row 5 and after 41 stitches in
3 and 4, got 42 at the end of row 5.
Thanks Jane! You’re the best! 🙂
Many thanks for the reply – I should have persevered as I dislike being beaten! Sorry for not replying sooner but have been so busy with other projects. I WILL knit it as it’s lovely.
Hi!
What does it mean to k1 (yo k1) to last stitch? Does.this mean repeat this.sequence – k1 yo k1? So it would be k1 yo k1 k1 yo etc?
Hi Nancy! You repeat the instructions that are inside the parentheses until you get to the last stitch. K1, (yo, k1), (yo, k1), etc. Hope that helps!
I have only got 36 stitches and I am down to step #14. Is this correct, do we loose stitches and make up again or have I gone hopelessly wrong?
I’ve taken it out and starting again! Decided I had done something wrong so off we go!!
Hope for better luck this time, Patricia!
Hi – Our daughter LOVES this infinity scarf but asks if it can be 28″ in length . Your thoughts? And suggestions, please!
Thanks so much- Ann
Hi Ann, This one is meant to be 58″ around. She would have to change the pattern to get the length she desires.
What yarn did you use????
Hello Jan, I used a dk weight undyed yarn that I hand dyed.
Hi Mom just wanted to thank you for the lovely pattern i’m hoping to start on it after I finish the project i’m working on now . Here’s hoping I don’t have any problems as I am an intermediate knitter but thee is a few steps I don’t know , but I will go to utube if I do . Thanks again
You’re welcome Diane!
can this be done on round kneedles?
Hi Merry, this pattern is made to knit flat then seam together. Hope that helps!
Are we supposed to kbit in between thw lace patterns or when doing the lace inset 1, do we complete the rows for both 1 and 2 insets with no knit or purl across on the wrong side. My knitting went broader or wider so i thought i misunderstood the directions. Please explain. Thanks.
Elena
Hi Elena – you just follow the lace inset patterns without adding any knitting or purling across the wrong side.
