My 9th grader bounced in the house after school today bursting with news. It seems she’d learned how to make root beer in science class! “It was sooo fun!” She exclaimed, “and tasted amazing!” Her enthusiasm was so contagious that within minutes we were running out the door to get supplies for this DIY Root Beer.
If you want to make your own fun and amazing tasting root beer, you’ll need:
- 2 cups of sugar
- 2 tablespoons root beer extract (this brand has a fantastic real root beer flavor!)
- 1 gallon of water
- 1 pound of dry ice (you can get this at any grocery store – just ask for it!)
- a container that can hold all of the above ingredients.
The whole process takes about 10 to 15 minutes and is as easy as combining the water with the sugar and the root beer concentrate. Stir to combine (it’s okay if all of the sugar doesn’t dissolve). Then carefully, with tongs, add the dry ice. Watch your witch’s brew….well, Brew! My daughter’s science teacher told the class to make sure they didn’t breath in the smoke from the dry ice. Apparently, breathing it in has been known to cause headaches.
Once you are sure all dry ice has melted, enjoy a glass with ice or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! Whichever “floats” your boat.
