Here’s a supremely simple hat project – no fiddling with double pointed needles or finding the right size circulars. Just straight forward knitting. As a bonus, this Knit Flat Hat has big chunky cables that make it look impressive and trendy – a great gift idea!
Finished hat fits 18 to 22″ head
Materials:
100 yards Bulky Yarn, such as Wool-Ease Chunky, Lion Brand Homespun, or Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky
US 13 needles, (9 mm)
cable needle
tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
Cable – sl 3 to cable needle and hold in front. k 2 from L needle, k 3 from cable needle. Sl 2 to cable needle and hold in back. K 3 from L needle, k 2 from cable needle.
Dec Cable – sl 3 to cable needle and hold in front. k2tog from L needle, k 3 from cable needle. Sl 2 to cable needle and hold in back, knit 3 from L needle, k2tog from cable needle
Double Dec Cable – sl 2 to cable needle and hold in front. k2tog from L needle. k 2 from cable needle. Sl 2 to cable needle and hold in back, k2tog from L needle, k 2 from cable needle.
Last Cable – sl 1 to cable needle and hold to front, k2tog from L needle, k1 from cable needle. Slip 1 to cable needle and hold to back, k2tog from L needle, k1 from cable needle.
Instructions:
cast on 52 stitches
Row 1: p1 (k2, p2) to last 3 sts, k2, p1
Row 2: k1 (p2, k2) to last 3 sts, p2, k1
Rows 3 – 6: repeat rows 1 and 2 twice more
Row 7: p1, k8, kfb (p2, kfb, k6, kfb) to last 12 sts, p2, kfb, k8, p1 (60 sts)
Row 8: k1 (p10, k2) to last 11 sts, p10, k1
Row 9: p1 (k10, p2) to last 11 sts, k10, p1
Row 10: repeat Row 8
Row 11: p1 (Cable, p2) to last 11 sts, Cable, p1
Row 12 – 15: repeat rows 8 and 9 twice
Row 16: repeat Row 8
Row 17: repeat Row 11
Row 18 – 21: repeat Rows 8 and 9 twice
Row 22: repeat Row 8
Row 23: p1 (Dec Cable, p2) to last 11 sts, Dec Cable, p1
Row 24: k1 (p8, k2) to last 9 sts, p8, k1
Row 25: p1 (k8, p2) to last 9 sts, k8, p1
Rows 26 – 27: repeat Rows 24 and 25 once more
Row 28: repeat Row 24
Row 29: p1 (Double Dec Cable, p2) to last 7 sts, Double Dec Cable, p1
Row 30: k1 (p6, k2) to last 7 sts, p6, k1
Row 31: p1 (k6, p2) to last 7 sts, k6, p1
Rows 32 – 33: repeat Rows 30 and 31 once more
Row 34: repeat Row 30
Row 35: p1 (Last Cable, p2) to last 5 sts, Last Cable, p1
Row 36: k1 (p4, k2) to last 5 sts, p4, k1
Row 37: p1 (k4, p2) to last 5 sts, k4, p1
Row 38: Repeat Row 36
Row 39: p1 (k4, p2tog) to last 5 sts (26 sts)
cut yarn leaving a 20″ tail. Thread through remaining stitches and sew back seam with right sides together to create hat.

What does the directions “kfb” mean?????
