Ideas were spinning through my head as I watched my brother cut down a tree in his front yard this summer. I didn’t have a firm idea of what I’d do with the thin wood slices I asked him to cut from one of the branches but they were just so lovely and sweet smelling. Coasters? Appetizer plates? Gift tags? It was clear I’d have to sit with these for a while to find out what they were destined to become.
In the pursuit of creating a rustic Christmas to go along with my pretty burlap garland I made several years ago, I finally decided on wood burned ornaments. My daughter, Jaydin, has a wonderfully artistic hand with the wood burning tool and with some help from Google images, we came up with far more designs that we wanted to make than wood pieces we had to contain them. Snowflakes, reindeer, doves, Christmas trees and more. Wood burning tools are inexpensive and actually quite easy to use.
We will certainly be burning memories into wood for years to come…
I had a thought to do this with some wood shapes I have lying around from the craft store. I’d love your input on which wood burning tool you had success with. Clearly your daughter has artistic ability but good tools will help me make up for whatever I lack in that department. Thanks!
Hi Suzanne, truthfully, we just got the cheapest one from our local craft store and after coupon it ended up being about $8. It came with 3 different tips and it was quite simple to use. She used a few pieces to practice on initially to see how it worked but it wasn’t long before she was creating beautiful pieces!
