Here’s an easy and free sock pattern I worked up for daughter in law Cindee! These fun cuff down socks use the Tweed Rib Stitch Pattern to add a lively texture. The slipped stitches create fun little dashes and dots of color. This pattern would work well to break up unwanted pooling in variegated yarns. I love the effect with self striping yarns!
Materials:
100 grams fingering weight sock yarn
size 2.25 mm (US 1) needles – double points or one long circular
2 stitch markers if using circular needle
Gauge:9 stitches per inch in stockinette Finished Size: Despite using slip stitches, this is a very stretchy stitch pattern. The leg of my finished sock is 5″ in circumference unstretched, but easily stretches to 10″ in circumference.
Stitch Abbreviations:
sl1wyif= slip 1 with yarn in front
Cuff:
cast on 72 stitches using German Twisted cast on (or another stretchy cast on suitable for cuffs)
(k2, p1) around for 1.5 inches. (about 16 rounds)
Leg:
Tweed Rib Stitch Pattern:
Round 1: p3(sl1wyif, k1, sl1wyif) around
Round 2: (P3, K3)around
Round 3: P3 (k1, sl1wyif, k1) around
Round 4: (P3, K3) around
repeat rounds 1-4 10 times (40 rounds)
* or until the leg of the sock is as long as you’d like
Heel Flap:
divide stitches in half. You will work back and forth on the next 36 stitches only
Row 1: (sl 1, k 1) across
Row 2: sl 1, purl to end of row
repeat rows 1 and 2 – 17 times (34 rows)
Turn Heel:
working on same 36 stitches:
sl 1, k 23, ssk, turn
sl 1, p 12, p2tog, turn
sl 1, k 12, ssk, turn
continue last 2 rows until all stitches have been worked. End on a purl row. (14 stitches)
Create Gusset: (Instructions assume you’re using double pointed needles. If using one circular, place a stitch marker at the beginning of Needle 2 and Needle 3 to indicate start of next needle)
knit across heel
NEEDLE 1: pick up 18 stitches along edge, pick up 1 stitch between side and instep stitches, NEEDLE 2: continue knitting instep stitches in the Tweed Rib Stitch Pattern, beginning with row 1. NEEDLE 3: pick up one stitch between instep and side, pick up 18 stitches along side, knit 7 to center of heel
Round 1 of gusset: NEEDLE 1: knit to last 2 stitches, k2tog. NEEDLE 2, knit next row in Tweed Rib Stitch Pattern. NEEDLE 3: ssk, knit to end of round
Round 2 of gusset: NEEDLE 1: knit, NEEDLE 2: knit next row in Tweed Rib Stitch Pattern, NEEDLE 3: knit
repeat rounds 1 and 2 until there are 18 stitches on needles 1 and 3. (You now should have 18 stitches on needles 1 and 3 and 36 patterned stitches on needle 2.)
Foot:
continue knitting stockinette on needles 1 and 3 and in the Tweed Rib Stitch Pattern on needle 2 until the foot measures 1.5″ less than the desired length.
Toe:
Round 1: Needle 1: knit to last 2 stitches, k2tog. Needle 2: ssk, knit to last 2 stitches, k2tog. Needle 3: ssk, knit to end of round.
Round 2:knit
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 20 stitches total remain. Knit to end of needle 1. Arrange stitches with 10 stitches on each of 2 needles. Kitchener toe.
Then pull on your warm and snuggly new socks. Don’t forget to cast on a second pair for a friend!
Would love a pdf version of this pattern.
Could you add an abbreviations explanation? Thank you!
Hi Karen, I added an explanation for the sl1wyif. It stands for slip 1 with yarn in front. Hope that is helpful!
Thank you – that is very helpful! Looking forward to trying these out!
I agree, a way to download this pattern would be terrific. My resolution this year is to get over my fear of making socks and the pattern looks like something I could do. I’ve taken 3 sock knitting classes only to be intimiated and leave the whole project in discarded bags. This year I want to finish one pair of socks
Good Luck with the socks, Sandi! I think these are pretty straight forward. The pattern is short enough that you can easily just copy and paste into a word document. I hope you get your first pair made. I remember how thrilled I was to complete my first pair! So fun!
Sweet!! Can’t wait to make these! Thank you for the pattern!
can this pattern be adopted to two needles? just cant seem to do the circular thing.
