My sister was recently in charge of an activity for her daughter’s 1st grade class. With a VERY limited budget she created these adorable little grass hair buddies. In the spirit of spring and the positive reaction from the kiddos in the class, I wanted to share this fun idea with all of you!
Step One- Gather supplies, you will need: potting soil, grass seeds, 3 oz. white bathroom cups, scissors, water, and two 8½X11 inch full sheet label paper. (You can use any type of grass seeds, I purchased cat grass which is the same as wheat grass.)
Step 2- Let the children pick out a set of eyes and a mouth and cut them out. You can find fun facial features to print here or create your own images, or even use permanent markers and allow your artists to create their own faces. (If you are doing this project with a large group of children, it is a good idea to pre-cut around the stickers. It will save lots of time and you won’t have to supervise scissor safety)
Step 3- Allow the kiddos the place the faces they orchestrated onto their cup. Placing the faces on the cups prior to the planting will allow the children to turn the cup sideways to press the stickers on.
Here are a few finished examples…
Step 4- Fill the cup 2/3 of the way full with potting soil using a kitchen spoon.
Step 5- Place a handful of seeds on top of the soil inside the cup.
Step 6- Cover the seeds with soil by filling the cup almost to the top, and give it a good firm press. There should be about 1/3 inch of space at the top of the cup to allow for watering. Once you have finished packing the soil, add a quick splash of water.
Step 7- You will start to see growth within the first 3-4 days. You will want to keep the cup in a sunny area, but not full all day sun, as it will cause the small cup to dry out. Keep it watered so the dirt is moist but not too wet. Over watering will cause the roots to rot and mold.
Now that your grass buddies have sprouted their hair the kids can go to town with styling it. They can trim the hair, style the hair, or just let it grow!
Not only are Grass hair buddies fun to create and play with, they teach kids about the miracle of plants and what they need to survive.
Enjoy watching the joy on your child’s face, seeing their Grass Hair Buddies come to life!
