I recently challenged myself to re-purpose my old ornaments into more modern ones to fit a new color scheme. I first started with the Upcycled Fabric Ornament. I really liked the way they turned out, but they were fairly time consuming. That brought me to Round 2 of my ornament challenge – Yarn Ball Ornaments! They are much faster, only taking about 10-15 minutes each.
Many of our followers like to knit and/or crochet. If you are one of them, this ornament is perfect for your tree…. and surely, you have some extra yarn around the house!
I bought some Bernat Sheep(ish) yarn in Red, Robin Egg, and Chartreuse simply because they matched my fabric ornaments nicely. You can use any yarn or color to get your desired look.
Start with a dab of hot glue near the bottom of the ornament and set the end of the yarn on it. Try not to touch it. Hot glue hurts!
Wrap the yarn in a haphazard manner and put a drop of glue here and there to hold it in place.
After just a couple minutes you will see fewer and fewer gaps. It isn’t long before your ornament is finished! Place a final dab of glue on the bottom of the ornament, cut the yarn, and secure the yarn into the glue.
Voila! I have a few more to finish, but my tree is looking better already.
You could even take these a step further by adding in a wood skewer with a wooden bead at the end to make it look like knitting needles. That would be adorable!
Happy crafting to our yarn-loving friends!
