I’d love to say I came up with this awesome idea but it was one of those great ideas that fall into your lap when you’re minding your own business. I was admiring an adorable little cupcake stand at my local second hand store and upon closer examination, saw that it was put together by some unknown, but talented Crafty Friend. I purchased it, then decided to recreate it on a grander scale. A full size cake stand and a fruit bowl in my favorite color was a must! There’s no end to the items that could be used for this DIY project – for the bottom stand: a wine glass, a candle holder, a small cup, a bowl or even a shot glass. For the top: a small plate, a large plate, a bowl. You could even stack them in a tier for a unique serving platter! I foresee several more of these in different colors in my crafty future!
I returned to my second hand store and picked up 2 candle stick holders, a large plate and a large bowl – all in clear glass. These were going to be my new cake stand and fruit bowl! Start by washing each piece really well and grab that trusty E-6000 Craft Adhesive. Seriously strong stuff!
Place a ring of glue around the top of the candle holder and making sure it’s perfectly centered, press it firmly onto the bottom of your plate or bowl.
Allow the glue to dry completely. I waited for about 3 hours – very impatiently! I used white Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Primer
and aqua Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Spray Paint
. I didn’t want to paint the inside/top of my bowl and cake stand. If they were painted I wouldn’t feel comfortable putting food on them so white was my color of choice for the primer, which would show through the clear glass and make it appear to be white inside the bowl.
I waited 30 minutes between the two coats of primer. After an hour or so I was able to spray my 2 coats of aqua.
My new cake stand decided to double as a WIP stand today. I knew my Crafty Friends would totally understand.
I Love this SO much! Pinning to my “Make it” board on Pinterest 🙂
Those crafty genes at work again, I see!! Haha!
Clever idea. I love that you chose to paint them in a
color that goes with your decor.
Neat idea, but I’ve heard the E6,000 is actually very toxic.
Yes Janis, thanks for the reminder – many stronger adhesives have the same difficulty – potential toxicity and warnings to avoid the fumes. If you decided to do a project that required a strong adhesive such as E6,000 you’d definately want to use it according to the manufacturer’s directions, (in a well ventilated area, keeping it away from children and washing up well after use – the usual responsible behaviors when using any strong adhesive). Unfortunately, white glue just isn’t going to cut it with this project. 🙂
So cute! I’m going to try this as well!! Thanks for sharing!
I have tried this but when I spray it the paint starts to crack and chip as soon as I spray it on. Any ideas or suggestions as to why?
Hi Toni, are you using a primer? Could it be the brand of the paint? Are you using Rustoleum? I’m sure other spray paint would work as well but I’ve always had good luck with the Rustoelum brand.
I was wondering since Chalk paint (I make mine using non sanded grout or the premade in a tub- with acrylic paint) seems to be a good primer and other paints grab on to it- if Chalk paint could be used in place of Krylon? Of course I realize the issue with brush strokes showing, but just a thought-
