Coffee has been my warm beverage of choice for many years and it makes my heart sing every morning. Having a fabric cozy to take with me to the coffee shop helps me feel like I’m doing my part in keeping the cardboard ones out of the dumpsters. Plus, it is super cute! This fun tutorial will help you warm up a friend’s or your own heart this Valentine’s day. The coffee cup printable will make this gift extra sweet!
Print the template onto card stock. Cut just to the outside of the cup so that the outline remains. Use tape to hold a gift card in place.
4″ x 12″ Fabric A
4″ x 12″ and 2″x 2″ Fabric B
4″ x 12″ Fusible Fleece
2″ x 2″ Heat and Bond
2.25″ piece of 3/4″ Hook and Loop Fastener (Velcro)
I Heart Coffee Cozy Template & Coffee Cup Gift Card Template
Acrylic ruler, cutting mat and rotary cutter
Water soluble marker
Bone folder or other pointy tool
Double-sided sticky tape
Open toe foot, 1/4″ piecing foot, zipper foot, and utility presser (at minimum you can use the utility presser foot for all steps if you do not have the other feet)
Iron the fusible fleece onto the back of Fabric A. The bumps on the fusible fleece go toward the wrong side of Fabric A. Iron the Heat and Bond to the back of your 2″ x 2″ square.
Trace the cozy template onto Fabric A and cut it out. Trace the heart onto Fabric B and cut it out. Peel the paper backing off of the Heat and Bond that is affixed to the heart.
Position the heart in the center of the cozy and iron it into place. To help find the center, finger fold the heart in half and iron the front of the cozy in half. Match up the lines. Use a small ruler to determine vertical height.
Sew the heart down with a desired stitch. I used the open toe foot to make a tiny blanket stitch on mine.
Place the top of the cozy face down onto Fabric B. Trace the shape and cut it out.
Use Wonder Clips to hold the two pieces together. Starting on the short end, begin straight stitching the pieces together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Leave an opening for turning right side out.
Clip the corners and flip the cozy right side out. Use a pointy tool to poke the corners outward. Fold the raw edges of the opening inward and iron it down. If desired, use a sliver of the double sided tape to hold the opening shut. Top stitch the cozy with an 1/8″ seam allowance using the utility foot.
Use slivers of the double sided tape to position the hook and loop fastener on each end. The hook part will go on the inside, parallel to the short end. The loop part will go on the front, vertically. Sew the hook and loop in place with the zipper foot.
Once you start stitching, you’ll find these adorable heart coffee cozies tend to multiply. Spread a whole latte love around this Valentines Day!
