Storey Publishing sent Mom the book “Excavate Dinosaurs” written by Jonathan Tennant and illustated by Vladimir Nikolov and Charlie Simpson. Having a house full of dinosaur lovers I happily volunteered to do a book review!
Have you ever wondered how paleontologists piece together dinosaur skeletons to create the reconstructions you see in museums? Now’s your chance to try it for yourself!
The book draws you in from the very beginning with the fun dinosaur illustrations and the organized way it flows. It first welcomes you to become a Paleontologist and covers what dinosaurs were and what fossils are. It then goes into the details of what being a paleontologist is all about, including digging for bones and rebuilding skeletons.
Next, the book covers the different periods in which dinosaurs roamed the Earth such as: Cretaceous, Jurassic, and Triassic periods.
These sections also cover some of dinosaurs that lived during each period. I was very impressed with the illustrations and how well it kept the attention of my 5-year old. One of my favorite features, is the silhouette of a man on each page to help you fathom just how enormous these creatures were! The book both illustrates and describes the body, tail, head, limbs, and other fun features such as beaks and claws of each dinosaur.
The color coded tab along the side of the book known as the “field guide” makes for an easy & quick reference for both the dinosaur name and the period in which it lived.
The last section in the book is known as the “dig site”. There is a dig site for each of the 3 periods. This is where the hands-on fun begins. You get to pop out the dinosaur bones and construct 12 different model dinosaurs!
Some helpful hints for this sections are clearly outlined in the book, and I would recommend utilizing them. This activity really brings to life the job of a paleontologist and my kids had a blast figuring out which bones go with each dinosaur.
The back of the book also contains a glossary of words used throughout the book. Overall, the book was both fun and educational.
No matter the age, this book is sure to please all dinosaur lovers… It did mine!
