Homemade Yogurt

Since we’ve been in Greece, I’ve really come to appreciate a dish of yogurt with whatever fruit is in season. A drizzle of honey and a few nuts on top really make a tasty breakfast. I found the cutest pattern – Yogurt 101 from Briney Deep Designs that has a recipe for homemade yogurt, it’s amazing how easy it is, along with a knit jar cozy so you can make your own preservative free yogurt in a quart mason jar. The cozy helps keep your yogurt culture draft-free, at a good growing temperature.Knitted Homemade Yogurt Jar Cozy

I thought this would make the cutest housewarming type gift, so I added a coordinating button to hang the recipe from.  This used less than 100 yards of a worsted weight yarn. Or you could stripe it with leftovers! Mine was a self-striping yarn custom dyed for me by Turtlejen at Turtlemade.

Make Your Own YogurtI’ve done some experimenting and have found I can make a delicious Vanilla Yogurt, by adding a teaspoon of vanilla and 1/4 cup sugar to the milk. Chopped up fruit, such as strawberries really made it delicious also. I have a bonanza of oranges, which are in season here now, so I’m going to try orange bits and orange juice next.

I used some retail Greek yogurt that I bought at my local market that has live cultures. Worked like a charm! :-) I’ll bet you could get extra good yogurt for starter in Saudi too!

    There were excellent starts there.
However, when I moved to mid-MO years ago and visited the local health food store and asked about their yogurt start they stared at me blank-faced.
Then since I had been used to using an oven pilot light for the overnight process and then acquired an electric stove I just didn’t continue.
HOWEVER, I think I give it another try, though not certain where I could incubate my batches. What do you suggest?

I just sat mine on the counter with the knit cozy around the jar. It seemed to keep the jar warm and draft free enough to work just fine!
